FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method involves measuring height of unevenness at points selected in the image field of the road, where the said points form a rectangular grid relative the plane of the approximating surface of the road given by three points. Parts whose height exceeds the value of the ground clearance of a car are equated to obstacles. The quality measure of the road is the average value of variance of the height of unevenness which is calculated during each photoexposure. The permissible speed of a car is determined from the condition of restriction of vertical overload during movement on left and right lines of contact between wheels and the road surface. The least value of the speed is taken as the permissible speed. The device has two spaced out optical-location units and a digital computer. The digital computer includes a module for processing digital images of the road surface, a module for describing the road surface, a module for evaluating quality of the road surface, a module for identifying obstacles and a module for determining the permissible speed.

EFFECT: determination of unevenness of a road and permissible speed on the said road surface.
