FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method of determining activity of hydrogen ions involves batching a neutralising reagent into monitored water and measuring electroconductivity of the obtained solution. The neutralising reagent is batched in a continuous stream of the monitored water. A portion of excess amount of reagent is batched and electroconductivity of the flowing solution is continuously measured. Activity of hydrogen ions is determined through subsequent calculations based on the relationship between activity of hydrogen ions and value of maximum fall in electroconductivity of the solution. Maximum fall in electroconductivity of the solution is achieved in the process of lowering concentration of the neutralising reagent in the solution through continuous dilution of the reagent with the stream of the monitored water. The neutralising reagent is batched in form of a jet or in one batching channel in which there is counterflow of monitored water to a separate outlet, where the reagent jet has velocity sufficient for overcoming resistance of the counterflow of the monitored water in the batching channel and falling into the main stream with monitored water, or in two parallel channels into which the same monitored water flows, where alkali is batched into one of the channels, while acid is batched into the other.
EFFECT: more accurate measurement of activity of hydrogen ions in low electroconductivity media and avoiding the procedure for calibrating using standard pH values.
