FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: device has a cylinder with transparent walls mounted on the shaft of a stepper motor, a fixed transparent cylinder of the same shape, placed coaxially inside the outer cylinder, a light source and a light detector inside a cup. The outer cylinder is detachable and can be replaced by a similar cylinder which is automatically centred coaxially with the inner fixed cylinder during installation using a magnetic clamp with accuracy of up to 0.02% of its diametre. A laser light source is placed horizontally inside the inner fixed cylinder. Four light-detectors for measuring scattered light are placed in pairs in the vertical and horizontal direction around the laser beam. The method is realised using the device given in claim 1 and involves rotation of the outer cylinder with discrete variation of the sliding velocity in the gap between the cylinders and a time interval of 0.5-2.0 minutes for detecting the transient process and processing the diffraction pattern. The process of varying the sliding velocity is carried out in the forward and reverse direction in the range from 2.5 to 4000 s-1, and intensity of back scattered light measured in directions along and across the stream relative the point of entrance of the light beam.
