SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for synthesis of a compound of formula 
, where R1 is an alkyl or aryl group, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof, including hydrate, involving reaction of a compound of formula 
with a Grignard reagent of formula 
, where X is a halogen selected from Cl, Br and I, and R1 is an alkyl or aryl group; and optional conversion of the obtained free base compound of formula (I) to a pharmaceutically acceptable salt. The invention also relates to a compound of formula II; a compound of formula 
, where X is a halogen selected from O, Br and I and to use of formula II and IIIA compounds in synthesis of delmopinol and a derivative of the formula I compound.
EFFECT: novel method for synthesis of a compound of formula I using novel intermediate compounds of formulae II and IIIA.
