FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: section of a water surface whose minimum dimensions are much less than the length of dominant waves is irradiated with acoustic signals from under the water at zero angle of incidence. Signals reflected back are picked up. The time taken by the signals to reach the water surface and back is measured during irradiation. Local displacements of the water surface are determined and inclinations created by the wavelengths are calculated based on the local displacements. Wind speed over the water surface is determined from the level of signals reflected back by the water surface taking into account contribution of inclinations created by wavelengths into this level.
EFFECT: higher accuracy of determining wind speed over a water surface and high information content of analysis.
