FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: using mathematical formulas, multiple standards of nonlinear coefficients of similarity between the relief of the ice thickness and the relief of the temperature field of the ice cover are calculated a priori for arbitrary values of hydrometeorological elements and for different ice thickness values. The similarity coefficients are then determined using data of the original infrared image and compared to values selected from the multiple standards. Nonlinear similarity coefficients for the initial uniform solid ice of arbitrary thickness and for sections of ice interpreted on the received infrared image as an extended crack in the initial uniform solid ice with arbitrary thickness are then selected from the calculated values. The general direction of the extended crack is then determined. For the determined direction, the width of a crack with open water is calculated using said parametres.
EFFECT: more efficient use of satellite probing data received in the infrared band.
