FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: method involves creation of electrolyte flow directed above cathodes with magnesium towards upper circulation openings owing to changing the value of electrolyte gas filling throughout the length of electrolytic compartments. Electrolysis unit contains lined bath divided with a partition with upper and lower circulation openings into one or several electrolytic compartments with alternating anodes and cathodes; and collecting cell, lining of longitudinal wall in electrolytic compartment is made so that it overhangs above cathode screens; at that, distance between edges of anodes and lining is 0.5÷1.5 of average interelectrode distance for reaching increased gas filling of electrolyte in the area of cathode screens, separating plate above upper circulation openings is arranged relative to edges of anodes at the distance equal to 1.5÷4 of average interelectrode distances to maintain reduced gas filling of electrolyte at the separating plate.
EFFECT: increasing upstream magnesium output.
