FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to non-ferrous metallurgy, namely, to devices for magnesium and chlorine production by electrolysis of molten salts. Electrolysis cell for magnesium and chlorine production includes a lined bath divided by a partition wall with top and bottom overflow openings onto a collecting cell and a working compartment, in which there are cathodes made in the form of two plates and anodes. Anodes and cathodes are installed so that distance between them is 1.5–3.8 of anode width, at that interelectrode distance has variable height and makes 1:(0.5–2) of average value. In the lower part the anodes are made with a bevel with reduction of the anode width from top to bottom to 1/3 of the cathode bottom level. Cathodes on the side facing the collecting cell are rigidly connected by a brace.
EFFECT: use of the electrolysis cell reduces power consumption by reducing the electrical resistance of the electrolyte between the anode and the cathode while reducing magnesium losses.
