ELECTROLYZER FOR PRODUCTION OF MAGNESIUM AND CHLORINE Russian patent published in 2006 - IPC C25C3/04 C25C7/00

Abstract RU 2284372 C1

FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; devices for production of magnesium by molten salt electrolysis.

SUBSTANCE: proposed electrolyzer includes lined bath divided into collecting cell and electrolyte cell by partition provided with upper and lower overflow ports; anodes and cathodes are arranged in electrolytic cell; they are made in form of two parallel plates with guide shelves located in between them and inclined towards collecting cell. Electrolyzer has two shelves located in parallel relative to upper edge of cathode; they extend from cathode end faces as far as inclined shelves, thus forming horizontal circulating passage. Two other guide shelves are inclined forming passage of varying section; upper part of inclined passage is connected with horizontal passage and lower part of inclined passage is located below lower overflow port. In the center part of anode there are chlorine discharge passages; cathodes have inclined surface. Besides that, anode has bevel whose width reduces downward; anode bevel is parallel in lower part to inclined surface of cathode; chlorine discharge passages extend from anode bevel as far as upper overflow port. Chlorine discharge passages are made in form of alternating triangular recesses at varying depth; inclined circulating passage of cathode is located below lower edge of partition by 15-20 mm; depth of horizontal passage ranges from 25 to 35 mm.

EFFECT: reduced power requirements due to reduced electrical resistance of electrolyte between anode and cathode.
