FIELD: chemistry; biochemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology. The method involves selection of a suitable microorganism from microorganisms which facilitate hydroxylation of a substrate in position C4; culturing said microorganism in a suitable culture medium which does not contain peptones, where the obtained cell culture forms "granular" micella consisting of flocci septate without conidiospore and containin bloats, filled with inclusions; where said culturing optionally precedes a step for preliminary culturing of the said microorganism; adding a substrate capable of conversion to gamma-lactone of formula (I); converting the substrate to gamma-lactone of formula (I); extraction of the formed gamma-lactone.
EFFECT: invention increases efficiency of producing gamma-lactone of formula (I).
