FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method involves putting a sample into an electrothermal bath lying in a constant magnetic field, atomisation of the sample by heating the electrothermal bath, passing a radiation beam through the atomised sample, where the wavelength of the radiation corresponds to resonant absorption of the metal whose content in the sample is being measured. Before passing through the atomised sample, the radiation is partially linearly polarised. The change in the angle of inclination of the polarisation plane of the beam after passing through the atomised sample is measured and, based on that value, content of the metal in the sample is determined. The device has a radiation source, a polariser, an electrothermal bath lying in a magnetic field created by permanent magnets, an optical system consisting of a quarter-wave plate, an optical modulator, a second polariser, a monochromator, a photodetector and a signal processing system which is synchronised with the optical modulator.
EFFECT: invention reduces intensity of the radiation of the electrothermal bath which is incident on the photodetector compared to intensity of the radiation source.
