FIELD: information technology.
SUBSTANCE: method involves sending "traces" of a stream of audio-visual information to each of multiple client computers, on a permanent basis, generated by a client; for each of the sent "traces", a server is used to search for a coinciding "trace" for that "trace" in a trace "cache". Each "trace" in the "trace" cache contains a predetermined existence time, and any "trace" whose existence time has run out, is deleted from the "trace" cache together with any related identification information on the audio-visual information object. If the data base of "characteristic footprints" contains a coinciding "characteristic footprint", identification information on the audio-visual information, associated with that "characteristic footprint", which corresponds to the client, is sent from the server.
EFFECT: faster operation of the server owing to efficient provision of identification services to a large number of users at the same time.
