FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method of igniting a gas-discharge lamp involves applying power voltage across the inter-electrode space of the lamp, checking integrity and preheating electrodes of the lamp by passing current. Preheating of the electrodes is stopped after a certain period of time after igniting the lamp. The electrodes are heated in steady state when the lamp is burning.
EFFECT: more on-off cycles and longer service life of powerful gas-discharge lamps owing to a mode for mild formation of the cathode spot.
