FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: multi-layer coating is applied by vacuum-plasma method. First, a lower layer out of nitride or carbonitride of compound of titanium and aluminium is applied at their ratio, wt %: titanium 85.0-90.0, aluminium 10.0-15.0. Further, there is applied an intermediate layer out of nitride or carbonitride of compound of titanium, aluminium and zirconium at their ratio, wt %: titanium 71.0-79.0, aluminium 6.0-10.0, zirconium 15.0-19.0 and there is applied an upper layer consisting of nitride or carbonitride of compound of titanium, aluminium and zirconium at their ratio, wt %: titanium 61.0-71.0, aluminium 14.0-20.0, zirconium 15.0-19.0. Three cathodes arranged horizontally in one plane apply layers of coating. The first and second cathodes are made out of alloy of titanium and aluminium and are arranged opposite to each other. The third cathode is made complex out of titanium and zirconium and is set between the first and second cathodes. Also, a lower layer is applied with the first and second cathodes; the intermediate layer is applied with the first and third cathode, while the upper layer is applied with the second and third cathodes.
EFFECT: increased operability of cutting tool.
