FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to procedures of application of multi-layer coating on cutting tool and can be implemented at metal treatment. Vacuum-plasma application of multi-layer coating is performed. There is applied a lower layer out of nitride or carbonitride of a compound of titanium, zirconium and aluminium at their ratio, wt %: titanium 75.4-76.6, zirconium 10.0-10.6, and aluminium 13.4-14.0. Further there is applied an intermediary layer out of nitride or carbonitride of a compound of titanium, zirconium, chromium and aluminium at their ratio, wt %: titanium 73.2-75.1, zirconium 9.3-10.2, chromium 6.7-7.3, and aluminium 8.9-9.3; and finally there is applied an upper layer of nitride or carbonitride of a compound of titanium, zirconium and chromium at their ratio, wt %: titanium 69.0-72.0, zirconium 18.0-20.0, and chromium 10.0-11.0. Application of coating layers is executed with three cathodes arranged horizontally in one plane. The first of the cathodes is complex and made out of titanium and aluminium, the second one is complex out of titanium and chromium and it is arranged opposite to the first cathode, while the third cathode is complex out of titanium and zirconium and it is situated between the first and the second cathodes. The lower layer is applied with the first and the third cathodes; the intermediary layer is applied with all three cathodes, and the upper layer is applied with the second and the third cathodes.
EFFECT: increased operating capacity of cutting tool.
