SUBSTANCE: invention discloses a method and a reading device (1) for extracting information from an optical recording medium (10). In the method, the power level of reading the radiation beam (3) for scanning the optical recording medium depending on the read rate is established. The power level is determined using the formula 
, where α is the extracted predetermined parameter in the range 0.2<α<0.8, PN is the reading power level at nominal read rate, and n is the actual read rate divided by the nominal read rate.
EFFECT: high signal-to-noise ratio at high read rates.
