SUBSTANCE: invention provides image data preprocesing for improved data compression by providing a common pattern in image data which are usually not recognised by a bit stream processor when the image data are displayed in form of alternating colour channels. The invention is realised by receiving a digital image presented in form of a plurality of pixels. Each pixel is defined by a colour space which includes colour channels which are usually displayed such that the arrangement of the plurality of pixels looks like an alternating sequence of colour channels. It is then determined whether the digital image is divided into plane data sources, each including digital image data for each of the individual colour channels such that redundancy or another recognised sequence of digital image data can be easily identified by one or more data compression modules which are based on a pattern and/or statistics. Further, the plane data sources are sent to the compression module so as to more efficiently compress the digital image than when the digital image is in its alternated form.
EFFECT: increase in compression ratio of image data when transmitted in form of a bit stream.
