SUBSTANCE: Viterbi decoder with a channel for estimating the current signal-to-noise ratio includes series-connected transition metric evaluator, unit for calculating metrics and path memory, information character generating unit, as well as the following, connected to the unit for calculating metrics and path memory: memory for minimum path metrics, memory for path metrics and path memory. The input of the device is the input of the transition metric evaluator, and the output is the output of the information character generating unit. The device also includes series-connected unit for estimating the depth of the decoding history on which all decoding paths meet, and a unit for estimating the signal-to-noise ratio. The input of the unit for estimating the depth of decoding history on which all decoding paths meet is connected to the second output of the path memory, and the control output of the unit for estimating the signal-to-noise ratio is connected to the control input for synchronising the transition metric evaluator and the control input of the unit for calculating metrics and path memory, the data output of the unit for estimating the signal-to-noise ratio is connected to the second control input of the transition metric evaluator and is the output of the device on which, during operation of the device, a signal corresponding to the estimate of the current signal-to-noise ratio is output.
