FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: existing methods of measuring distance are based on differential frequency signal (DFS) analysis. In the disclosed method, distance is determined from the measured values of probing frequency at two time instants corresponding to DFS zeroes, separated from each other by a whole number of DFS half-periods. This enables to lower the required frequency deviation of the probing signal. Two versions of the present method are disclosed.
EFFECT: measuring distance with minimisation of the required frequency tuning range.
