SUBSTANCE: method is disclosed and a navigation device for maps switching. At certain stages the following is carried out: information is received, related to a current position, or a route is determined for travelling along it; cartographic information is displayed, including the current position or a certain route, on a navigation device; it is determined whether the current position or area along the certain route are covered relatively to a more detailed map; displayed cartographic information is switched to displaying a relatively more detailed map, if corresponding cartographic information of the current position or area along the route is available for display.
EFFECT: higher quality of vehicles navigation.
