FIELD: physics, navigation.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods and navigation devices for determining a route for travelling from a first position to a second position at a relatively low cost. A navigation device comprises memory storing a map database including a plurality of road segments and vehicle cost values, which represent the expected power or fuel consumption of the vehicle derived from acceleration data obtained from a plurality of vehicles that have travelled on the road segments; a processor to determine a route of travel for the vehicle from the first position to the second position, the determined route of travel minimising or relatively reducing the overall expected power or fuel consumption of the vehicle travelling between the first position and the second position; and an output device to output the determined route.
EFFECT: low overall cost of travelling on a route on a vehicle.
