SUBSTANCE: in the method of assessing conditions in a data transfer channel, probing packets are received in a data generation module, said probing packets passing through the data transfer channel while the data transfer channel operates in real time; information from the probing packets is used to provide estimation data when estimating the available bandwidth in the data transfer channel; an estimation of the available bandwidth is formed in an estimation module while the data transfer channel operates in real time, including execution of a data transfer channel filtration operation, wherein said execution step involves use of a Kalman filter and use of a state vector which corresponds to the characteristic demonstrated by said estimation data, wherein said characteristic is piecewise linearity.

EFFECT: high accuracy of estimating available bandwidth in a data transfer channel.
