FIELD: mechanics.
SUBSTANCE: invention concerns an elevator cage (3) moving in a vertical direction guideway. If necessary, the elevator cage (3) is braked or held in a fixed position by means of a brake mechanism. The brake mechanism consists of at least two brake units (12), at least one of which, preferably each brake unit (12) is equipped with a wear compensation device (30). A brake unit (12) has a brake housing (13), one moving and one fixed toward the box (13) brake pads (14, 15). The pads, if necessary, are pressed against the brake bar (8) by means of a feeding mechanism (19). The wear compensation device (30) is designed to hold, in fact, a constant air gap (If) on the side of the fixed brake pad (15), and the feeding mechanism (19) is designed to ensure a constant total air gap (It). In the braking method the above mentioned brake units are used.
EFFECT: application of friction materials of common usage and of low price, which can be worn in the process of braking.
