SUBSTANCE: identification system for controlling medicines has a medicine library, having a plurality of library medicine profiles, wherein each library medicine profile defines a list of medicine identifiers associated with medicines available for use in accordance with at least one profile for treating patients in a hospital and classification of patients and at least one of the allowable concentrations and dosages associated with each available medicine, an identification module, machine-readable data entries attached to the medicine or medicine container, machine-readable data entries carried by a patient and a controller connected to the identification module. The method describes operation of the said system.
EFFECT: automation of the process of identifying and associating a patient with the correct medicine to avoid errors.
