FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: light emitted by the illumination system varies from light having a start colour point (14) to light having a target colour point (12). The start and target colour point are defined in a first colour space (XYZ, RGBvid, RGBill), which is perceptually non-uniform. The method according to the invention converts the start and target colour point from the first colour space to a second colour space (Lab, Lch), which is more uniform to the human visual system than the first colour space. The method further comprises a step of generating an intermediate colour point (34, 11, 12) located on a transition-path (p, p′) within the second colour space, an intermediate distance (d) between the start colour point in the second colour space and the intermediate colour point in the second colour space not being larger than a threshold distance (26). The method further comprises converting the intermediate colour point from the second colour space back to the first colour space, and subsequently altering the light emitted by the illumination system (65) from the start colour point to the intermediate colour point. The invention further relates to an illumination system and a display device.

EFFECT: controlling a temporal variation of light to reduce eyestrain.
