FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: liquid crystal display (1) has a liquid crystal display panel (3) and a backlight (2). The backlight (2) uses a plasma tube (22) as a light source. This back light (2) has a substrate (21) and a matrix structure (23) in which a plurality of plasma tubes (22) is arranged on the substrate. The surface of the matrix structure, which lies opposite the surface on the side of the substrate, acts as a light-emitting section (29) for emitting light onto the liquid crystal panel (3). A thinner liquid crystal display can be made by using plasma tubes as the light source for the backlight.
EFFECT: possibility of supporting high definition display.
