FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: in order to detect structural components on fractures of steel articles, the fracture is etched in 3-4% nitric acid solution in ethyl alcohol and the nature of the microstructure found on the fracture is analysed using raster electron microscopy, wherein before etching, the fracture is soaked in pure ethyl alcohol for not less than 10 minutes.

EFFECT: more distinct exposure of microstructures on fracture surfaces.
