FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: described is an improved method of producing 2,4,8,10-tetraacetyl-6,12-dibenzyl hexaazaisowurtzitane by reducing 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexabenzyl-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane with molecular hydrogen in the presence of a heterogeneous palladium catalyst on a support corresponding to an acylating agent, solvent for the initial 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexabenzyl-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane and bromobenzene, which is characterised by that the support used is α-aluminium oxide granules, successively coated with γ-aluminium oxide in amount of 5-15% of the weight of α-aluminium oxide and pyrocarbon in amount of 1-5% of the total weight of the support, on which palladium is deposited in form of hydroxo complexes, the weight of which is 2-20% of the total weight of the catalyst, and the process takes place at pressure 0.5-2 MPa and temperature 20-35°C at the beginning of the process and then raised to 45-60°C. Use of such a support almost completely prevents disintegration of the catalyst, loss thereof during filtration and ensures high output of the end product. The end product is an intermediate compound in synthesis of a novel energy-rich compound - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12-hexanitro-2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW, CL-20), which is of great interest as a powerful explosive or a component of solid rocket propellant.
