FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for electric welding of metal plates of thickness 0.5 mm, as well as for studying gas discharge processes. The welded plates pressed to each other are placed on the cathode or anode mounted at a distance from each other, which is where breakdown in the discharge gap does not occur. To one of the electrodes a thin metal wire is attached, voltage is applied to the electrodes and the plates vertical end is touched with a wire. The wire length and voltage between the electrodes are selected so that gas discharge is ignited in the metal wire vapour filling the discharge gap. The resulting current melts and evaporates the said wire to form a vertical uniform weld along the end plates. The magnitude of the discharge current is controlled by changing ballast resistance in the discharge circuit.
EFFECT: method is simple to implement and provides a uniform weld seam of good quality.
