FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: macroparticles are accelerated by the field of a current pulse running on a helical structure. Power is fed to a helical waveguide and tapped from it on a coaxial cable through wave impedance matchers. Pieces of gold-plated tungsten wires with diametre D=20 microns and length l=10 mm are first magnetised along the longitudinal axis, thereby obtaining a magnetic dipole. From the sending cassette, the pieces are fed into the region of a magnetic field which aligns them in space such that their longitudinal axis coincides with the axis of acceleration. The wire pieces are illuminated with a beam of electrons from an electron gun. Further, a high-voltage pulse at Uinj=600 kV is supplied and the wires are pre-accelerated by the electrostatic field to velocity Vin=0.6 km/s, which corresponds to the velocity of injection into the helical waveguide. A pulse with voltage amplitude Uacc=490 kV and power P=2 GW is fed to the helical waveguide synchronously with the injected wire, which results in acceleration of the wire pieces in the longitudinal direction.
EFFECT: high depth of penetration of macroparticles into the medium.
