SUBSTANCE: method of determining a current characteristic (Ip) running through a primary winding (16) of a transformer (14) operating in saturation using an unreliable detected current (Is) running through the secondary winding (18) of said transformer, comprising steps of: detecting (32) a first reliable extreme point (EP1) of a cycle of the current in the secondary winding, comparing (34) the occurrence in time of the reliable extreme point (EP1) with an absolute time reference signal (CL), where the absolute time reference signal (CL) is a reference signal associated with a period of a periodic signal (Up) measured on the primary winding (16) at least before the transformer (14) started to operate in saturation, determining (36) a first characteristic of the current running through the primary winding in form of a phase angle (α1) based on said comparison. Disclosed also is a device which realises said method.
