SUBSTANCE: in a cellular communication network, user equipment (UE) can adapt the intensity (or measurement activity) with which it attempts to identify a new neighbouring cell, based on a comparison of the quality of the already identified neighbouring cells with the quality of a reference cell. This intensity is lower provided that the downlink received signal level (e.g. in terms of CPICH Ec/No or/and SCH Ec/No) from an appropriate selection of neighbouring cells (cells belonging to active or candidate set) is not weaker than the reference (e.g. serving) cell by a certain threshold. On the other hand the UE must identify a new cell with higher intensity provided the downlink received signal level (e.g. in terms of CPICH Ec/No or/and SCH Ec/No) from said selection of neighbouring cells is weaker than the reference cell by a certain threshold.
EFFECT: method which takes into account relative performance difference between the serving and the target/neighbouring cells.
