FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: tertiary butyl alcohol is used as a semi-product in organic synthesis, particularly for producing isobutylene and isoprene, which are used in production of butyl rubber and isoprene rubber. The method involves liquid-phase hydration of isobutylene or isobutylene-containing hydrocarbon mixture with water at high temperature in the presence of tertiary butyl alcohol as a solvent with forward feeding of the stream of initial reactants into a shelf-type column reactor filled with several layers of a sulphocationite catalyst, with subsequent extraction of the end product from the obtained reaction mixture by fractionation. The reactor is filled with five catalyst layers, wherein the amount of catalyst increases from layer to layer in the direction of feeding the stream of material, characterised by that the catalyst is in the layers in the following ratio, as a percentage of the total volume of the catalyst: in the first layer 5-7; in the second layer 8-10; in the third layer 12-15; in the fourth layer 20-24; in the fifth layer 43-56.
EFFECT: method increases conversion of isobutylene and increases selectivity on the end product.
