FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing tertiary butyl alcohol, which is used as a semi-product in organic synthesis, particularly for producing isobutylene and isoprene, which are used in production of butyl rubber and isoprene rubber. The method involves liquid-phase reaction of isobutylene or an isobutylene-containing hydrocarbon mixture with water at high temperature in the presence of tertiary butyl alcohol as a solvent with forward feeding of the stream of initial reactants into a column reactor filled with at least two layers of a sulphocationite catalyst, with subsequent extraction of the end product from the obtained reaction mixture by fractionation. A portion of fresh catalyst and a portion of catalyst which has spent at least 2000 hours in the same process are placed in each catalyst layer, the portions being in volume ratio of (0.3-1):1, respectively.
EFFECT: method reduces output of by-products and increases the service life of the catalyst in the reactor while maintaining efficiency of the process.
