FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method of determining heading towards the geographical north using an inertial sensor module, having three geometrical measurement axes and three accelerometer measurement axes, involves the following steps of: using data of the inertial sensor module in North finder mode to obtain a first heading value; using data of the inertial sensor module in gyrocompass mode to obtain a second heading value; determining the heading towards the North using the first and second heading values; and also calculating deviation between the first and second heading values; the heading towards the North used is the first heading value and/or second heading value based on the calculated deviation, wherein matching of the calculated deviation with the hypothesis of no movement of the inertial coordinate counter relative the Earth is estimated. Also, if the deviation matches, the first heading value is selected as the heading towards the North, otherwise the second heading value is selected as the heading towards the North.
EFFECT: method which enables to optimise search for the North using an inertial sensor module.
