SUBSTANCE: described is a method of producing aqueous polymer dispersions which are meant as coating agents or binder whose polymerisate P, which is obtained via radically initiated aqueous-emulsion polymerisation and is in dispersed distribution, is formed from (meth)acrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid or alkali metal salt thereof, itaconic acid, acrylic acid and (meth)acrylic esters and alcohols containing 1-12 carbon atoms, characterised by that during the polymerisation process, itaconic acid and/or acrylic acid and/or (meth)acrylamide are fed at a variable, i.e. not constant, rate (gradient conditions) to the reaction mixture, wherein (meth)acrylamide and/or acrylic acid polymerise in such an amount that their amount together with the amount of polymerised 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid or alkali metal salt thereof and itaconic acid does not exceed 10 wt % with respect to the total amount of monomers.

EFFECT: aqueous polymer dispersions meant as coating agents or binder, having low water absorption and whose strength and outer state do not deteriorate during prolonged exposure to moisture.
