FIELD: polymer production. SUBSTANCE: invention provides copolymers with apparent molecular weight up to 500000, which contain: 20-95% of monomer units obtained from water-soluble radically-polymerized ethylenically-unsaturated compounds containing sulfonic or sulfonate groups; 4 to 80% of monomer units obtained from water-soluble radically-polymerizable ethylenically-unsaturated compounds containing N-methylol or N- alkoxymethyl groups; 0.1 to 20% of hydrophobic monomer units obtained from group of water-insoluble ethylenically-unsaturated compounds; and hydrophobic end groups: initiator and regulatory molecule residues. Up to 50% of monomer units containing sulfonic or sulfonate groups, if necessary, can be replaced by monomer units obtained from water-soluble radically-polymerizable ethylenically- unsaturated compounds containing groups COOM (M is H, alkali metal, alkali-earth metal, or ammonium) or carboxamide groups. Copolymers having markedly reduced surface tension and viscosity can be used as dispersants in aqueous polymer dispersions.
