SUBSTANCE: image characteristic evaluating circuit 13 analyses input image data and obtains first brightness data indicating backlight brightness during one period of vertical scanning, and image characteristic data corresponding to the first brightness data. The image data conversion circuit 14 performs conversion to input image data in accordance with image characteristic data and outputs image data on a liquid crystal panel 11 after conversion. A circuit 17 for calculating brightness period after period based on the first brightness data obtains second brightness data indicating backlight 12 brightness during each of the plurality of periods into which one period of vertical scanning is divided. A brightness setting circuit 18 controls backlight 12 brightness using second brightness data.

EFFECT: reduced flicker on the screen as a result of changing backlight brightness during one period of vertical scanning.
