FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: in the method of measuring the level of a substance in an open metal container, conditions for below cutoff propagation of electromagnetic waves are first created in the top unfilled part of the container. Electromagnetic oscillations are excited in the container as in a cavity resonator and their resonance frequency is determined, from which the level of substance is determined.
EFFECT: wider field of use by enabling measurement in containers without the need to increase their height.
