FIELD: oil and gas industry.

SUBSTANCE: method for determining the stability of horizontal well shaft is implemented in the following way: cores are extracted from different depth levels of the well; cylinder-shaped specimens are made of them and subject to single-axis compression along rotation axis till complete destruction. Besides, specimens are cut out at various angles to core axis. Changes of specimen axial deformation value in time are measured for each of different values of applied stresses, depending on the well depth. Rate of deformation is calculated, and as per decrease of deformation rate in time and at constant stress, the conclusion is made on the well stability and usability of drilling mud with certain density.

EFFECT: method ensures the possibility of determining the well shaft stability in formations with strongly pronounced anisotropy of mechanical and strength properties of rocks; simplifying the required tests of specimens under conditions of single-axis compression.
