FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: well logging tool has a high-energy neutron source which is configured to irradiate the formation surrounding the tool with particles; at least one scintillator which is sensitive to gamma-radiation resulting from interaction of the neutrons with the formation; neutron shielding material surrounding at least one scintillator, wherein said neutron shielding material contains helium-3 gas, at least one electrode lying in the gas and configured to generate an electric signal when neutrons enter the gas; a neutron moderator surrounding the neutron shielding material; and an amplifier which is optically connected to at least one scintillator.
EFFECT: reduced background noise and high efficiency of the detector.
