SUBSTANCE: well logging instrument has at least one of an ionising and nuclear radiation generator; a high voltage power supply functionally connected to the radiation generator, the generator and the power supply longitudinally separated by a distance sufficient for installing a radiation detector between the radiation generator and the power supply; at least a first radiation detector placed between the generator and the power supply; and an electrical connection between the power supply and the generator, a radiation shield placed between the radiation generator and the first radiation detector; and a source control detector placed between the radiation shield and the radiation generator, wherein the source control detector is configured to generate a signal which corresponds to the output radiation power of the radiation generator.
