SUBSTANCE: electronic device includes an actuation element configured to alter its profile relative to a housing in response to a device event. Altering the actuation element profile may include externally extending or changing the form factor of the actuation element. Device events, for example when the electronic device is a radiotelephone, may include receipt of an incoming message. When such an event occurs, the actuation element profile of a call activation key is altered. In response to the actuation element profile being altered, a user is alerted on the incoming message, while maintaining the control status associated with the actuation element so that the control status before and after altering the actuation element profile is the same.
EFFECT: providing the user with a physical, inaudible alert on a device event such as an incoming electronic mail message.
