FIELD: instrumentation.

SUBSTANCE: proposed method consists in setting and maintaining the rage of permitted values of clearance between controlled entity metallic surface and eddy current probe with inductor. Eddy current transducer is used to measure clearance between controlled entity metallic surface and eddy current probe with inductor. Proceeding the results of measurements, controlled entity metallic surface displacement toward eddy current probe with inductor relative to its initial position is defined and memorised. Note here that proceeding from the results of measurements, eddy current probe with inductor is displaced through such distance which allows maintaining aforesaid clearance within preset range of permitted values.

EFFECT: decreased dependence of sensitivity and accuracy and influence of foreign metal bodies on accuracy, smaller clearance.
