SUBSTANCE: access node of a heterogeneous multi-carrier communication system implements a communication method involving receiving from an access terminal information for a plurality of pilot signal sets; identifying from said plurality of pilot signal sets a first pilot signal set and a second pilot signal set from an additional coverage zone; determining that at least one of said first or second pilot signal sets from the additional coverage zone meets a predetermined criterion for adding said first and second pilot signal sets to an active set of said access terminal. When it is determined that said predetermined criterion is met, an instruction is sent to the access terminal to add said first and second pilot signal sets from the additional coverage zone to the active set of said access terminal.
EFFECT: facilitating smooth switching from one frequency to another in a multi-carrier communication system.
