SUBSTANCE: proposed system comprises automatic main clutch, stepped gearbox, main gearbox and gearbox control unit. Control unit is programmed to generation of control signal displaying selection of desired gear. It includes two different sets of gear selection control algorithms. Control algorithms comprises first control algorithm to be used under normal conditions and second algorithm to used for running over soft surface. Proposed method consists in defining road state by function of prevailing resistance to motion and wheel-spin. In case road state corresponds to normal conditions first algorithm is used. In case road state corresponds to running over soft surface second algorithm is used. Vehicle comprises claimed system for power train control. Vehicle control unit incorporates computer with memory with loaded software. In execution of machine-readable program functions of claimed method are executed.
