FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: classification method involves emitting a probing signal, receiving an echo signal, measuring the time of arrival of the echo signal, measuring distance; the echo signal is received by a multichannel receiving path in which time realisations are assembled and the overshooting of the threshold level by the echo signal is determined; neighbouring receiving channels in which the threshold has been exceeded are selected; values of the echo signal envelope in neighbouring channels are summed; time delays are measured based on overshoots which exceed the overall threshold of measuring the overall envelope in several spatial channels and the target is classified based on the estimate of the measured time delay during comparison thereof with a reference.

EFFECT: high probability of correct classification of detected objects.
