SUBSTANCE: method of recognising facial images involves recording and recognition using gamma-correction and logarithmation of images; conversion thereof into spectra by two-dimensional cosine transform and removing high-frequency spectral components; when recognising test images, comparing the obtained test spectra with spectra stored in a reference base is carried out based on the average brightness value of the test image; the converted test spectra are classified based on minimum distance criterion; a decision on recognition is made. The system for realising said method includes a recording device and a recognition device, the recording device having a gamma-correction unit, an adder, a logarithmation unit, two two-dimensional cosine transform units, a reference base unit, and the recognition device having an adder, a logarithmation unit, a gamma-correction unit, two two-dimensional cosine transform units, a spectrum generating unit and a classifier.
