SUBSTANCE: method of allocating resource elements in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system for transmission of a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) is disclosed. The method includes converting one or more resource elements to a two-dimensional frequency-time domain; and partitioning the one or more converted resource elements into physical resource block (PRB) units. One or more resource elements form a pattern for at least a portion of PRB for CSI-RS transmission. According to a version of the invention, CSI-RS resource elements with an identical subcarrier index for the common cell are code-division multiplexed (CDM) with CDM measurement equal to the number of CSI-RS resource elements with an identical subcarrier index for the common cell.
