FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to making of optical fibre. The fibre is made from heated glass. The optical fibre is treated by holding in a treatment zone, the length of which is at least about 5 m. In the treatment zone, the fibre is cooled at an average cooling rate which is defined as the value of the input surface temperature of the fibre minus the output surface temperature of the fibre, divided by the dwelling time of the fibre in the treatment zone, which is less than 5000°C/s. Temperature of the surface of the optical fibre coming out of the treatment zone is at least about 1000°C. Further, the fibre is brought into contact with a fluid region in a fluid bearing and changes direction. The fluid bearing has a channel formed between two side walls. Inside the channel, the fibre is in a suspended state as a result of pressure difference arising from higher pressure formed by bringing the fluid under the fibre inside the channel compared to pressure over the fibre.
EFFECT: reduced heat ageing defects of the optical fibre.
